About the Instructor:
Laura Stevenson graduated summa cum laude with a degree in Vocal Pedagogy/Performance from Texas Women's University, where she has continued her graduate work in the field of vocal performance. She has performed for nearly thirty years in the musical theatre, pop and classical fields. Laura Lewis Stevenson has sung with Casa Manana, Dallas Summer Musicals, Houston Grand Opera Apprentice Program, Dallas Lyric Opera and the Denton Light Opera Company as well as several local community theatres. She now restricts her work to freelance soprano oratorio in order to spend time sailing with her husband, Jason, and two little boys, Nathan and Colin.
Mrs. Stevenson is the full-time voice instructor at Birdville High School. She also maintains a small private studio. Before Birdville opened, Mrs. Stevenson taught at Richland High School, her alma mater. She has taught private voice for seventeen years. Mrs. Stevenson has taught over fifty All-State Choir members and the leads in every musical from Birdville High School since it opened. Her studio had a record-breaking sixteen semi-finalists, five finalists, two second place winners, and three first place winners at NATS competition in 2007. Her students have included Show Choir members, Miss Texas pageant contestants, Johnnie High Country Music Revue Singers and professional recording artists. Mrs. Stevenson also tutors music theory and lectures on song literature for the young singer at local universities.
Laura Stevenson's professional affiliations include Sigma Alpha Iota, Texas Music Educators Association, National Association of Teachers of Singing, Music Teachers National Association and the National Opera Association. She is also the author of "Warm-ups and Vocalises for the Young Voice" and "Repertoire for the Young Singer."
"As a member of the Birdville Choral Staff, Laura Stevenson provides an opportunity for our students to excel in vocal performance. Her passionate approach to correct singing and genuine interest of each student's vocal potential provides our program the extra edge needed to be successful. Her commitment (and) her loyalty to students enables them to receive the highest level of preparation. I highly recommend taking privately from Laura Stevenson. If you are serious in becoming the best singer possible, then please consider Laura Stevenson as your private voice teacher." -Robert Stovall, Fine Arts Director, Eagle Mountain/Saginaw I.S.D.
"Laura Stevenson is dedicated, reliable and knowledgeable. Mrs. Stevenson is as successful with upper level students such as the All-State students as she is with the beginning freshman students who need encouragement and confidence." -Brad White, Retired, Former Birdville I.S.D. Director of Fine Arts
"Laura Stevenson has a wonderful gift of teaching and cultivating the voices of singers, whatever their age, vocal ability, or experience. She is successful at making otherwise unexciting vocal pedagogy into fun, extraordinary learning for students as they delight in their developmental experience as singers. (Her) students are also inspired to continue studying voice at the collegiate level. I am convinced that a voice instructor of Ms. Stevenson*s caliber is a major factor in the overall success of our choral program. We are extremely fortunate to have her with us." -Peggy Graff, BHS Choral Director
